Capitol Day Adventures: Mississippi Values

4 Mar

Each year, faculty, staff and students travel to Jackson to speak for Mississippi’s community and junior colleges, and the struggle for funding we face. This year, a cohort of individuals across MCC’s campus banded together to support this great effort. Included in this group were Dr. Krista LeBrun, Director of eLearning, and Marie Roberts, eLearning Assistant and Proctor.

Students and staff/faculty members from community and junior colleges across the state.

While visiting the capitol, the Honorable Videt Carmichael recognized members from Meridian Community College while in the Senate Gallery, and the Honorable William Shirley took us on a tour of the house floor. We met briefly with Representative Steven A. Horne, speaker pro tempore Greg Snowden, Senator Terry C Burton and Senator Sampson Jackson.

Student attendees represented athletics, academic programs, and career and technical programs from the college. They were also given an opportunity to sign Governor Phil Bryant’s “book,” located just outside the ceremonial office, as well as hang out inside the House of Representatives.

At the end of the day (after climbing the four floors of the Capitol building at least ten times), the group from MCC gathered together at the House podium for a group shot:

The crew from eLearning was pleased to be involved in the process, and as distance education continues to grow, the presence of eLearning and online education will be felt for many years to come.

A big thanks to Al Mitchel and Tara Herrington for organizing this event, as well as fellow faculty members and MCC students who were able to volunteer their time.

Branding for Canvas: Making MCC Stand Out

1 Mar

We’re sure you know by now that MCC, along with the other members of the MSVCC consortium, are switching to Canvas LMS this summer. With this change comes a lot of exciting new opportunities, including a new login screen for students to use in order to access their courses.

Now, a login screen needs to stand out. Make a statement. Be welcoming. Make people interested and feel included. And it can’t hurt to be pretty.

Last week, the Canvas folks sent us our standard login screen. It looked like this:

Boring Canvas Login

And while it’s definitely functional … it wasn’t quite our style.

So the eLearning team grabbed some of the most talented students on campus, a few members of the vocal performance team known as Dimensions (check them out at: http://www.meridiancc.edu/finearts), as well as a semi-reluctant but all-around amazing Dean Thompson, to give us a hand with branding. Preston from promotions was our photographer and David over in IT helped us with CSS coding.

After an interesting afternoon of trekking across campus looking for that perfect photo spot:

Dean Thompson was very gracious to give us a hand.

Preston showing of his paparazzi talent. Dean Thompson was very gracious to give us a hand, and Preston showed off his paparazzi skills.

MCC is officially branded for Canvas! And now, thanks to the team effort, eLearning is excited to share with you our new and totally unique Canvas LMS login page! This page will be the new site that students, faculty, and staff use to access all courses beginning summer 2013.
